Itinerary
The up-and-coming "798" Art Zone is located in Dashanzi, northeastern Beijing. This hip and artistic gallery space originated as Factory 798, originally used to produce electricity. Architecturally, the factory is largely utilitarian with massive ducts lining the support beams and large windows serving as a major source of lighting. Its halls were built using Soviet aid in the 1950s, with East Germany providing architectural and industrial assistance.
Artists and cultural organizations re-discovered the space in 2002 and began to divide, rent out and remodel the factory, gradually developing it into galleries, art centers, artists' studios, design companies, restaurants, and bars. The area soon became popular with many of Beijing's avant-garde, whose postmodernist intellectualism has further added to the revolutionary feel of "798".
"798" has evolved into a fascinating cultural concept to both experts and normal folks alike, continuing to shape and reshape our concepts of urban culture and living space. A walk around this art area will introduce you to one of the various facets of contemporary Chinese culture.
