        Detailed Description

At Estancia Mercedes, we invite you to enjoy an authentic and deeply educational experience that combines one of Patagonia’s most deeply rooted traditions—sheep shearing—with the warmth of local cuisine. This activity not only immerses you in the rural life of southern Chile, but also offers a valuable understanding of the herder’s craft and the fundamental role sheep farming has played in shaping the identity of the Magallanes region.

We begin the day with a comprehensive introduction to sheep farming in Patagonia, focusing on responsible management and the challenges faced by ranchers in this unique environment. You'll learn how the animals are prepared for shearing, what weather conditions are ideal for the process, and why this practice is essential both for the well-being of the sheep and for ensuring high-quality wool.

Our hosts will explain the different shearing techniques in detail, from traditional hand shears to modern methods using specialized equipment. You’ll also learn how wool is classified by texture, thickness, and cleanliness, and how it is later used in the textile industry.

But this is not just a spectator activity: under the close guidance of our experienced herders, you'll have the chance to take part in the process yourself—learning to shear with hand shears and experiencing the rhythm of rural life firsthand. It's a hands-on, immersive, and enriching experience, ideal for those who want to discover Patagonia from its very roots.

Throughout the day, we’ll share stories about the sheep farming tradition in Magallanes—from the arrival of the first settlers to its modern-day evolution. These anecdotes and local tales will help you understand the deep connection between the land, its people, and the animals that inhabit it.

We’ll end the activity with one of the greatest pleasures of rural life: a traditional fire-roasted lamb, slowly cooked over open flames for hours until it reaches the unique flavor that has made it famous throughout Patagonia. It will be served with homemade bread, fresh salads, and other carefully selected local products, in a cozy setting where you can relax, connect, and savor every moment
