Itinerary
ITINERARY
Travel south from Darwin through tropical country, passing former WWII airstrips, en route to the town of Adelaide River. Make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a site dedicated to those killed in the air raids in Darwin in the 1940s. Continue to Edith Falls, where there is time for a refreshing swim in the paperbark and pandanus fringed waterhole beneath the falls (swimming is seasonal and opening is controlled by NT Parks). Time to relax with lunch at the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre. Board a 2-hour scenic cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge, for a chance to see freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the river, and many interesting species of birdlife. The NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge Tour takes you through the first gorge alongside limestone escarpments before a short 400m walk to another boat for the second gorge. Along the way, knowledgeable guides share insights into the local Jawoyn culture, plants, animals and geological formations. Afterwards, return to Adelaide River, where you'll have the opportunity to enjoy an evening meal at a typical Northern Territory pub (own expense) before returning to Darwin
