Itinerary
Today we will tour the Treasures of Chiloé: Castro and Dalcahue "Churches and Shipyards".
Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the charms of Castro and Dalcahue, two of the cultural jewels of Chiloé. This tour is designed to immerse you in the rich history and vibrant culture of the region, offering an authentic and enriching experience.
Castro is the Heart of Chiloé Our trip begins in the historic city of Castro, where you will visit some of its main attractions. We will start at the Yumbel Peasant Fair, a market full of life where you can enjoy fresh products, local crafts and an authentic Chilote atmosphere. This fair is the perfect place to interact with locals and learn about their customs and traditions.
Next, we will go to the Gamboa Viewpoint, from where you can admire the iconic stilt houses, colorful houses built on stilts in the water, which are an emblem of Castro's architecture. This viewpoint offers an unparalleled panoramic view, ideal for taking photographs and appreciating the unique beauty of these traditional homes.
You cannot miss a visit to the San Francisco de Castro Church, an architectural jewel recognized as a World Heritage Site. This church, with its impressive wooden structure and colorful interior, is a testament to the craftsmanship of the inhabitants of Chiloé and their deep religious faith.
After exploring Castro, we will head towards the Church of Tey, a fascinating example of the community tradition known as “Minga de Tiradura de Iglesia”. In this event, the entire community voluntarily participates in the transfer of the church from its original location to its current position, demonstrating the strong social cohesion and collaborative spirit of the Chilotes.
Our next stop is the picturesque town of Dalcahue, known for its artisanal riverside shipyards where boats are built in the traditional way. This ancient craft is an integral part of life in Chiloé and offers a unique insight into the skills and techniques passed down through generations.
In Dalcahue, we will visit its World Heritage Church, another magnificent example of the religious architecture of Chiloé. The church, with its wood and shingle design, is a place of serenity and historical beauty that you cannot miss.
As you tour Dalcahue, you will be able to admire the wide variety of tile designs in the unique houses of the town, each one telling a different story through its patterns and colors. This tour will allow you to better understand the visual and cultural identity of the region.
We will also explore a small but attractive museum (when open), where you can learn more about the history and traditions of Dalcahue and Chiloé in general. This museum offers an intimate look at the life and cultural heritage of the area.
Finally, we will conclude our excursion at the Dalcahue Artisan Market, a meeting point for numerous artisans who gather to sell their unique products. Here, you can find everything from weaving and basketry to wood carvings and ceramics, each piece made with care and representing the rich Chilote culture.
